Situation
In business and in healthcare, time and again . . .
. . . well intentioned people pre-define solutions before they understand the problem.
As a result, teams drive hard to impose old practices on colleagues who have new and subtle problems.
Approaches like Six Sigma and Lean are good for solving some problems, but they retrench existing ways of doing work. They don't lead to innovation. On top of this, organizations face more than one problem. Teams need a system of solutions and a roadmap for implementation.
Take Action
Integrate a new way of seeing the world and a new way of thinking, to develop systems that make a difference.
Design Strategy and Human Centered Innovation
People and their Experience
The first difference in developing innovation is to learn from the people who are inside the system, actually doing the work. Talk with them, observe them and learn from them.
Discover and Select
Innovation involves alternate modes of thinking and acting. Discover first, then select. Organize teams in activities that learn and expand their knowledge of people and systems. Then conduct a disciplined analysis to select the greatest opportunities.
Integrate and Implement
Design thinking and design process become part of the business. Integrating learning and selecting into your normal work lets your team produce innovations that are adopted by employees and customers alike. Every implementation builds your success and becomes a chance to learn something new.
